Quick Steps

1. Creating a New Catalog.
To create a new catalog, select File | New. On startup Advanced File Organizer creates a new catalog by default. To save it, click File | Save.

2. Scanning Disks
To add a new disk, select Edit | Add Disk. Use the dialog that appears to locate and select the desired disk.

3. Organizing the Category Tree
To organize the Category Tree, select File | Setup Categories. You can add, edit, delete and print categories using the dialog that appears.

You can also edit the Category Tree in the process of assigning a Category to a file or folder (see Associating Files/Folders with Categories).

4. Adding a New Category
To add a new category, select File | Setup Categories. You can browse all existing categories. To add a new category, select a desired top level category for it and click the Add button in the dialog below.

The root of the Category Tree is marked "Categories". If "Categories" is selected before adding, the new category will be a top level one. If any Category is selected, the new Category will be created within it.

5. Browsing File/Folder Properties
The Advanced File Organizer main window is divided into two parts and looks similar to Windows Explorer. In the left-hand part of the window you can browse folders and disks in a tree. In it's turn the right-hand part is divided into three frames. It contains properties of the file, folder or disk selected in the left-hand part (for folder or disk you can browse the list of files or folders contained in it). So, the main program Window containes four parts:

  1. Left-Hand Panel Folders, disks and groups in the tree.
  2. Information Panel is for general properties. Type (Folder or Disk can be selected in the left part of the main window), Name, Contents (number of files and folders), Serial Number and Used place (for disk), location and size (for folder).
  3. Middle Panel displays the list of files and folders contained in the selected folder or disk. Here you can select a folder or a file.
  4. Properties Panel displays the properties of the file or folder, which is selected in the middle panel.

You can hide Information and Properties Panels from the main program menu. Use menu item View | Information Panel to hide/show Information Panel. Menu item View | Properties Panel will hide/show Properties Panel.

6. Associating Files/Folders with Categories
To assign a category to the file, folder or disk, right-click it and choose the 'Edit Categories...' item from the context menu. You will see the 'Categories' tab in the Properties window with all categories currently assigned to this object. To change categories, click the Change button.

7. Browsing the Category View
To browse the Category View, select View | Category View or press the Categories button on the toolbar.

8. Saving the Catalog
To save the current Catalog, select File | Save… The first time when you save the Catalog, Advanced File Organizer asks you to specify its name and location.
